Artist statement
Making space for what is quietly noticed.
Jessica is a hand-embroidery artist based in the Western Cape, South Africa. Her textile works hold close observation, memory, and the changing character of the natural world.
The practice
A language of thread, repetition, and observation.
My work begins with attention: to a small shift in colour, the rhythm of a leaf, a remembered walk, or the way a thread changes as it catches the light.
I work slowly by hand, building each surface through repeated stitches. The process leaves room for instinct, allowing the image to gather its own texture, density, and quiet movement.
Materials
Cloth and thread as a way of seeing.
Cotton, silk, linen, and hand-dyed thread are chosen for their tactile character and their capacity to carry subtle shifts in colour. Each material becomes part of the image, not simply its surface.
Western Cape studio
Work made slowly, close to home.
The studio is a place for looking closely and working without haste. Drawings, found colour, fabric, and thread sit together as a work develops.
From this small, attentive practice, each piece becomes a record of time: a hand-made image intended to be lived with, returned to, and noticed anew.
